6 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route
Overview
Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach and is considered the hardest and challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. The rapid speed of the ascent and steepness makes acclimatization very difficult. The Umbwe Route is the trail for trekkers looking for a true climbing challenge. It is a quiet, seldom used path that can be very difficult, yet very rewarding at the same time. This is the route to choose if you want to test yourself on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, far from the crowds that are found on the more common trails.
Tour Highlight
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,900m)
After registration at Umbwe Gate, the trek begins through the dense rainforest. The trail is steep and follows a ridge between two deep valleys, with occasional views of Kibo Peak through the trees. The first night is spent at Umbwe Cave Camp.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (3,900m)
Leaving the forest behind, the trail becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend through heath and moorland. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the scenic Barranco Camp, located beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,995m)
After breakfast, you’ll tackle the famous Barranco Wall—a scramble that offers both challenge and panoramic views. The trail then winds through valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp, a vital acclimatization stop.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
A short yet steep hike takes you to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the early morning push to Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Around midnight, begin your final ascent to the summit via Stella Point. After reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, take time for photos and celebrations before descending to Barafu, then continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Hotel
Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate where you will receive your summit certificates. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to the hotel in Moshi for a much-deserved rest.
